French retail giant Carrefour has told just-food that it plans to merge two of its product teams. However the group played down reports today that it is to make job cuts.

The company said today (29 October) that it had informed its employee representatives on 24 October of plans to combine the group’s French own-label brand team of 45, with its group-level team of 60 staff.

However, a spokesperson for Carrefour denied a report in French business daily La Tribune that it planned to cut two-thirds of its workforce in the purchasing department for non-food products in Europe.

“The figure relating to a supposed two-thirds reduction in the number of employees in procurement functions does not reflect the actual situation or any defined scope,” the spokesperson told just-food.

The group said the merge will take effect on 1 January 2009 and that it has informed employee representatives it is reconsidering its commercial strategy for non-food products in France.
