French retail giant Carrefour has announced plans to launch a major advertising campaign, aimed at increasing customer numbers at its French hypermarkets.

The advertising campaign will be followed by a customer loyalty programme in April, reported Reuters.

“2004 will see the relaunch of hypermarkets in France,” Bernard Dunand, head of Carrefour France, was quoted as saying. “I am confident hypermarkets will have an important future.”

Carrefour recently reported disappointing fourth-quarter sales, due in part to lower consumer spending at its French hypermarkets. Fourth-quarter like-for-like sales at the company’s French hypermarkets fell 1.8%, mainly due to lower sales of non-food items.
