A one-day strike by workers in Carrefour’s French stores is set to go ahead as planned on Saturday (9 April).

Unions have called for a 24-hour stoppage in protest at salary levels, job cuts and working conditions.

Contacted by just-food today, Carrefour declined to comment on the prospect of strike action. A spokesman said that, within the framework of an annual agreement, Carrefour had offered a pay rise of 2% in 2011 in two tranches of 1% – as well as increasing staff discounts on Carrefour products from 7% to 10%.

“This adds up to a rise in the purchasing power of Carrefour staff of 3.2%,” he said.

Staff had until 31 March to agree to the offer but unions say that what management put on the table fell short of expectations.

An official at French union Force Ouvriere warned of serious disruption at Carrefour stores across France on Saturday, adding that there were plans to stage a day of action every month until staff demands were met.
