French retail giant Casino has signed a partnership deal with French post office group La Poste.

Under the five-year deal announced yesterday (19 October) Casino’s convenience store division will set up stores next to post offices through La Poste’s subsidiairy Poste Immo.

A spokesperson for the company said it’s too early to disclose a number of stores but the programme will start with 50 stores opening in France.

Casino said the partnership will enable the food retailer to increase its presence in towns with less that 12,000 inhabitants and cater for the needs of local elected representatives and consumers. The deal is expected to reduce La Poste’s real estate costs, by renting its vacant buildings to convenience stores.

Casino is present in Latin America and Southeast Asia and generates 46% of its turnover outside France, according to its third quarter sales data.
