French cheese group Bel, the company behind brands including Laughing Cow and Babybel, has posted a 7% rise in first-quarter sales.

The company recorded a 7.4% increase in sales to EUR448.9m (US$609.2m) for the first three months of the year. Cheese sales, which make up over 90% of Bel’s turnover, rose 8%.

Bel said today (16 May) that its “strong” growth during the first quarter had been due to a recovery in Europe.

Last month, Bel agreed a deal to buy Ukrainian cheese producer Shostka. The company employs 1,000 staff and has a manufacturing facility in north-eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border.
