French retail giant Carrefour has announced plans to expand its Ed discount supermarket chain into eastern France with the acquisition of 44 stores from Germany’s Edeka.

Carrefour said it plans to convert the stores, situated in Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Compte, to the Ed banner from their current Treff Marche banner by the end of the year, reported Reuters.

Carrefour operates 503 Ed stores in France and the chain generated €1.8bn (US$2.1bn) in turnover last year.

The company did not disclose financial details of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval.
