Guyenne et Gascogne has reported an increase in first-half sales, posting “satisfactory” performances in April and May, although the Carrefour franchise operator admitted that June was “more difficult”.

The operator of Carrefour stores said yesterday (18 July) that for the first six months of the year, sales, excluding fuel, were up 0.5% to EUR209.4m (US$296.5m). For the second quarter, sales rose 1.6% to reach EUR109.2m.

Guyenne et Gascogne said it has continued to progress thanks to its network of Carrefour Market stores, “confirming its good fit with consumer expectations”.

It said that its Sogara hypermarkets are “continuing to be penalised by their exposure to the non-food sector” but insisted its roll out of the Carrefour Planet concept is expected to “further strengthen their appeal significantly”.

The retailer said it will transform its Bordeaux-Lormont store by September, with the other Bordeaux store and Toulouse hypermarket to be completed by the end of the year.

In Spain, the company said that its Carrefour stores are maintaining their position and are “holding up well, particularly on food lines”, despite a “relatively unfavourable environment”.
