The French farming, retail and manufacturing sectors came together this morning (17 June) at a meeting backed by the French government to discuss commitments on transparency in retailer margins.

The meeting was called to discuss proposals to “to guarantee transparency in the setting of prices for food products and reinforce control of the application of rules in commercial relations”, which were outlined by the French agriculture minister, Michel Barnier, and minister for industry and consumer affairs, Luc Chatel, on Saturday.

An examination of prices and margins will be accelerated and the results of a study on prices and margins for dairy products will be published, the government said.

“The government has confirmed all commitments made last Saturday,” a spokesperson for farmers union FNSEA told just-food. “It is important that this is carried out with utmost speed and that deadlines are met. We cannot afford delay.”

The government said it will publish its investigation into retailer margins on pork products next week and dairy by the end of July.
