French based supermarket chain Carrefour today (Thursday) announced a strategic partnership with Aeon of Japan under which it will sell Aeon its eight hypermarkets in Japan.

Carrefour said the two parties are entering into a partnership which covers the use of the Carrefour brand in Japan, collaboration on selected commercial concepts and the sale of Carrefour private label products in Carrefour Japan stores (Aeon will also be able to sell labels such as “Reflets de France” in Aeon stores).

The objective of Carrefour and Aeon is to develop and strengthen the hypermarket format in Japan through the alliance of the leading Japanese retailer and the second largest global retailer, it said.

The sale of Carrefour Japan is part of a programme announced by Carrefour Group in September 2004 to divest non-strategic or underperforming activities, Carrefour said.
