Lactalis has announced the acquisition of Czech Republic company, Promil, whose main activity is in cheesemaking.

Operating from three production sites, Promil’s cheese output in 2005 totaled approximately 8,500 tonnes.  It is Czech market leader for grated cheese and ranked second for cheese slices. The company has an annual turnover of just over EUR30m (US$38.5m) and a workforce of around 200.

The French dairy products group said the purchase would allow it to have a more solid presence in the country, where until now it only had a sales subsidiary, and also in the Central Europe zone as a whole. Lactalis added that it was also looking to build up connections between its Czech business and its existing operations in Poland.
