French chain Leclerc is poised to step up its European development over the next couple of years.

In Portugal, where it already has 15 outlets that generate a turnover of more than EUR350m (US$458.14m), the retailer is planning to add a further 10 outlets between 2007 and 2008. Leclerc also intends to open a number of specialised outlets (auto, DIY, OTC pharmacy and cultural products) and fuel stations.

Leclerc is also eyeing expansion in Italy with the opening of seven new hypermarkets planned this year in association with local partner Conad. The Franco-Italian alliance, which currently has 26 jointly-run stores in the country, generated a turnover of EUR850m in 2006 and has market share of just over 4%.
