French sugar giant Tereos and stevia supplier PureCircle are to team up to develop low-calorie sweeteners for markets in Europe and Brazil.
The two companies today (22 September) announced a venture, Tereos PureCircle Solutions, to market “high-purity stevia extracts” and “innovative” sweeteners combining sugar and stevia in Europe.
The venture, Tereos said, will “address major food and beverage companies’ needs in terms of launching reduced-calorie products”. France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Italy would be “core” markets for the venture, the company added.
The two sides have also signed a “co-operation agreement” to sell stevia extracts and sweeteners to the Brazilian market.
Tereos chief executive Philippe Duval said PureCircle was “a natural choice” for the company as it looks to build its presence in natural sweeteners.
“We see sugar’s partnership with stevia as an excellent opportunity for enhancing our product portfolio and attending to customers that look for natural sweetening solutions,” Duval said.
