McCain Foods has criticised the demands of striking workers at the company’s plant in Matougues, in north-east France.

An official for McCain France yesterday (30 November) called the employees’ call for a 10% pay rise “unreasonable”.

The strike started on 27 November and yesterday entered its fourth day, bringing production to a standstill.

The official said: “We offered a 2.2% wage increase, plus training provision which would allow workers to be multi-competent and thus move up the pay scale ladder, as a well as an increase in the allowance for working in cold conditions, but it was rejected on Tuesday.” Talks were set to resume yesterday evening.

The official insisted the strike had not affected McCain’s supply of products as it has been able to call on other plants to compensate for lost output.
