Strike action by French milk producers, which began on 10 September in protest against low milk prices and market deregulation, moved to central Paris today (22 September).

Protesters are distributing 22,000 litres of milk free of charge at the French capital’s Place de la République.

On Monday, dairy farmers emptied 25 tankers, each carrying 10,000 litres of milk, outside Danone’s plant in Villecomtal. Similar action was reported at Sodiaal and Lactalis plants in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

Alluding to a change in EU aid rules allowing member states to offer emergency subsidies, Pascal Massol, president of farmers’ union the Association National des Producteurs du Lait Independants (APLI) said: “The principal objective is no longer to obtain a sprinkling of aid but a radical reform of the system.”

Massol called for an immediate EU meeting to impose “reasonable” price levels throughout Europe.
