The EU’s Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) has pointed the finger at the state of France’s poultry abattoirs in a report following an audit last year.

The audit recognised certain improvements had been made since the last audit in 2008. However, the FVO said ante mortem et post mortem inspections “fell well short of satisfying EU norms”.

These inspections were often carried out by abattoir personnel themselves and not by vets, which legislation demanded.

The report also underlined “serious failures of compliance” with veterinary regulations and animal well-being.

A leadng French consumer protection association said the report was is the third occasion – after 2006 and 2008 – France had been targeted by the EU for the non-respect of norms in its poultry abattoirs.
