The price of private-label and value products is rising faster than that of branded foods across a number of categories in France, a new survey has suggested.

France’s national trading standards agency, the DGCCRF, has released the findings of its retail price observatory for December and the calendar year 2008.

The rate of increase for retail pasta prices has eased, standing at 16.35% year-on-year for December 2008.

Rice rates are also easing. However, according to the study, retailers’ value ranges in particular spiralled sharply ahead of Christmas, recording a 36.79% year-on-year rise. This compares to an average price hike for the category of 12.92%.

Non-formula milk powder marked a 7.42% year on year price rise over 2008. Again, private-label and retailers’ value ranges outpaced the category, rising by 13.35% and 14.12% respectively.
