French distribution chain Intermarché (Groupement des Mousquetaires), has signed a strategic alliance agreement with Spanish counterpart Eroski.

The agreement makes provision for the setting up of a joint venture company specialised in combined purchasing in Spain and at European level.

The two partners will also share their expertise in own brand development and are poised to welcome other European distributors to the alliance.

Operating in Spain since 1988, Intermarché currently has a network of 109 supermarkets there.

Eroski has the second biggest share of Spain’s food distribution market with just over 1,800 outlets

Combined, Intermarché and Eroski represent a global turnover of €41.75bn (US$40.9bn).
