French judicial authorities have opened a preliminary enquiry into the discovery of meat unfit for human consumption that was used in food production by a company based in centre-west France. The meat had been used in the preparation of 650,000 tins of corned beef, which were shipped to four EU countries – the UK, Ireland, Belgium and Greece.
In some cases, the spoilt meat was unsuitable even for animal consumption.
French veterinary inspectors have ruled out any risk to consumers as the meat had been sterilised and cooked. However, an EU alert was nevertheless issued at the end of last month in an attempt to withdraw the suspect products from shelves.
