Prices of goods in France’s hard discount stores are higher than “budget” items sold in hypermarkets and supermarkets, according to a consumer watchdog.
A study by Familles Rurales found that a basket of goods cost 4% less in a hypermarket than in a hard discount store.
In general French prices rose by 1.1% in 2009 compared to 2008, with categories such as frozen foods and hot drinks increasing “sharply”, while prices for fruit juice, dairy and eggs fell.
The study was carried out over a two-month period across 31 departments in France, monitoring the prices of 34 staple goods.
