French retailer Systeme-U has claimed that it increased its share of the country’s retail market in 2010 on the back of rising sales.

Systeme-U said yesterday (15 February) that, last year, it upped its share of France’s retail market by 0.1 percentage points, taking its share to 9%, to “confirm” its place as the country’s fourth-largest retailer.

The company’s turnover in 2010 was up 5% to EUR15.22bn, excluding fuel. Revenue including fuel rose 6.7% to EUR19.43bn.

Excluding fuel, sales from the retailer’s Hyper U, Super U and U Express all increased. Sales from the Marché U banner, however, fell.

At the end of the year, Systeme-U had 1,407 outlets – 794 discount stores and 613 convenience shops.

Last week, France’s largest retailer E.Leclerc posted a 5.4% increase in turnover, excluding fuel, for 2010.
