French supermarket chain Système U is investing €28.5m (US$34.1m) in the construction of a logistics centre in centre-west France dedicated to fresh produce.
Located at Savigny-en-Véron, near Chinon, the 24,700 sq m centre will supply fruit, vegetables and fish to 146 Super U and Hyper U outlets in 14 departements in the region.
The centre is scheduled to open in March 2007 and will employ 230 staff.
Earlier this year, Système U unveiled plans to set-up a European purchasing group in 2006 together with Leclerc which would negotiate with leading international brands. It already has a joint purchasing group in France with Leclerc.
