French retailer Système U and Terrena have signed what they called an “original” listing agreement for the co-op’s pork products.
Système U will guarantee an outlet for Terrena products at above normal market prices in return for the processor upping the quality of meat it supplies.
Breeders feeding their pigs with linseed and maize rich in omega 3, gradually reducing antibiotics and improving the general well-being of the herd would be eligible for a “bonus” of EUR0.08-0.12 per kilo of pork.
The costs of breeders implementing the added-value measures is estimated at between EUR0.03-0.05 per kilo.
The agreement is seen as bringing some regulation to France’s volatile pork market, where prices can vary sharply.
Next month, Système U will begin selling Terrena-supplied pork under the Nouvelle Agriculture brand with sausage products added in April.
