Macedonian dairies are reported to have threatened to stop buying out milk from local producers if the government does not take urgent measures to stop illegal milk and milk products imports.
Representatives of large local dairies met with veterinary and customs officials and warned of an impending crisis in the dairy sector due to huge reserves of milk products and illegal imports.
Deputy director of the customs officer, Vanco Lazarev, said customs officials have enforced a limit of 1kg of milk and meat products per person entering the country.
Lazarev also said that as of 1 February, customs would also introduce a new system to control import quotas of milk and meat products.
Private dairies and meat processing companies agreed to set up a join coordinative body with veterinary and customs authorities to solve current problems, reported the Macedonian Press Digest.
