
General Mills has set a deadline of 2025 for its US business to only use cage-free eggs.
The Cheerios owner, which first announced plans to use the eggs in its US operations in July, updated its website with the deadline.
“Eggs are an important ingredient in many of our products, and we strive to ensure that the hens laying these eggs are treated humanely,” the statement read.
When the news was first announced, General Mills made note of the effect of avian influenza and its effect on US egg supply, promising to “determine a path and reasonable timeline” toward its cage-free egg commitment.
“We really see this as a long-term goal that will require unparalleled collaboration. We’ll work closely with our suppliers as they rebuild the supply chain to determine a path forward on this commitment,” Steve Peterson, director of sustainable sourcing at General Mills, said.
