Bauer, the privately-owned German dairy processor, is rolling out a range of plant-based dairy alternatives.

The family-owned business has launched vegan yogurt in the past but the company has now developed a new umbrella brand, GrünKraft, for a range of products.

“In order to remain up-to-date for consumers and relevant to retail, new milestones are always necessary. In a sense, we have to keep re-inventing ourselves without losing sight of the core of our identity,” Michael Ohlendorf, Bauer’s managing director, said.

The new range includes five plant-based yogurts, with oat as the principal ingredient. The Bavaria-based business sought to emphasise how the oats are sourced in the German state.

Bauer's GrünKraft range also includes cheese-alternative products, sold sliced, which the family-owned group said are "limited to three basic ingredients – water, potato starch and high-quality olive oil".

Ohlendorf added: "As a dairy, milk is and will continue to be our core business. It is the heart of our company. At the same time, we are opening up new target groups and thereby helping as many consumers as possible live the exact lifestyle they want. And topics such as healthy eating, well-being and sustainability now play a role here, sometimes an important role.

Bauer, based in the Bavarian town of Wasserburg am Inn, employs around 1,600 staff. Its turnover in 2019 was EUR755m (US$915.2m).
