French cheese-maker Bongrain has snapped up the German spreads brand Brunch from Unilever.

Bongrain, which owns the German soft cheese business Edelweiss, manufactured Brunch for Unilever and opted to buy the brand after talks with the consumer goods giant.

“It’s a good brand,” a spokesperson for Bongrain insisted. “We were already co-packer for Unilever [and] Germany is our main market after France.”

A spokesman for Unilever Deutschland said the Anglo-Dutch giant’s decision to sell Brunch was not a bad sign for the brand.

“It’s a win-win situation, it’s nothing against the brand,” he said.

Both sides declined to comment on the financial details of the transaction.
