The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare today approved the high-intensity sweetener Sunett® (acesulfame potassium) for use in beverages, foods and tabletop sweeteners. In Japan, Nutrinova Japan Ltd. will market Sunett with the Food Vitamin Company of Takeda Chemical Industries Ltd.
Sunett, manufactured in a patented process by Nutrinova, a unit of Celanese AG, is approved for use in more than 100 countries, including the United States and the countries of the European Union. The calorie-free sweetener is used in more than 4,000 food and beverage products.
“We are now ready to offer the Japanese food industry a new and better sweetening option so that consumers can benefit from the improved sugar-like taste of products containing Sunett,” says Arthur Steinmetz, CEO of Nutrinova. “Products sweetened with Sunett can now be exported to Japan. This will enable global players in the food and beverage market to introduce their most successful reduced-calorie brands to Japanese consumers without having to change the sweetening system.”
Sunett is 200 times sweeter than sugar and has a fast-acting impact sweetness with no lingering aftertaste. The safety of Sunett has been thoroughly tested and is confirmed by data from more than 90 studies.
Sunett can be used as a single sweetener or in blends with other non-caloric or caloric sweeteners in Nutrinova’s state-of-the-art-sweetening system called the Sunett® Multi-Sweetener Concept.
“Due to its ease of application and outstanding, temperature-, pH- and storage stability, Sunett is an ideal partner for all sweeteners available on the Japanese market today,” explains Masayuki Suzuki, representative director at Nutrinova Japan Ltd. “Sunett can be used in applications ranging from carbonated soft drinks to traditional Japanese products, such as tsukemono (specialty pickles).”
