The European Commission has given the green light for German retailer Rewe to buy Czech supermarket chain Delvita.

The Commission said today (26 April) that the deal would not hurt competition in the Czech retail sector nor throughout the EU and the wider European Economic Area.

Rewe, which struck the EUR100m (US$136m) deal to buy Delvita last November, already runs the Billa supermarkets and Penny Market discount stores in the Czech Republic.

Delvita’s former owner, Belgium-based retailer Delhaize, decided to quit the Czech Republic after 15 years in the country.

In 2005, Delvita recorded sales of EUR282.2m and an operating loss of EUR1.5m.
