German dairy farmers have launched a national strike to call for higher milk prices.

The strike, organised by the 30,000-strong German Federal Dairy Farmers Association (BDM), has seen “significant participation”, a spokesperson for the union told just-food today (28 May).

The delivery boycott, which was launched yesterday, is expected to continue for seven to ten days.

“About 90% of our members took part in the delivery boycott, refusing to supply milk to the dairy companies who currently pay as little as 27 cents (US$0.42) in the north and 35 cents in the south per litre of milk,” the spokesperson said.

The BDM is calling for a base price of 43 cents per kilogram.

The farmers are also protesting EU plans to raise dairy quotas and depress the market price of milk in response to growing global demand for milk.

“The strike has seen widespread support from both member and non-member dairy farmers across the EU,” the spokesperson added. “We expect imports of milk to Germany from other European countries to also fall.”
