US fastfood chain McDonald’s announced plans this week to launch its Donatos pizza restaurant chain in Germany.

McDonald’s bought Donatos in 1999 as part of its campaign to expand beyond the near-saturated burger market. In the last couple of years the company has also bought stakes in Chipotle Mexican Grill, a Denver-based chain of fresh Mexican restaurants, and Pret a Manger, a UK sandwich chain.

As of 30 June this year, the company operated 197 Donatos outlets, all in the US. It is not known why McDonald’s chose Germany for the chain’s first foreign campaign, although spokeswoman Lisa Howard told Reuters that the German pizza market is worth some US$5bn.

The first German Donatos will open in the Bavarian capital of Munich, beginning as a dine-in restaurant only. There are plans to offer a delivery service at a later date. The group is eyeing Frankfurt as a location for its second store, which should open by the end of this year.
