German retail giant Metro Group has announced the sale of 119 Extra supermarkets to rival Rewe in a bid to further streamline its Extra network.
The sale is effective 1 January 2005, Metro said, adding that the stores’ employees would transfer to Rewe.
Metro said a further 18 Extra stores are to be sold off or closed. Altogether, these 137 supermarkets represent a sales volume of around €550m (US$716.7m). Another 12 Extra stores are to be integrated into Metro’s Real hypermarket unit. Following these changes, Extra’s network will consist of around 280 stores, mainly in the northern and western regions of Germany.
