German retail giant Metro Group is to roll out the government-backed “1 plus 4” nutrition labels on its entire own-label range sold in its domestic market.

The “1 plus 4” front-of-pack labels were introduced by the German government last year and shows information calories – which is the ‘one – and four other nutrients: fat, saturates, sugar and salt.

The company started to use a similar model on some private-label lines in 2008 but said the use of the labels would give consumers “greater transparency and more understandable information”.

CEO Dr Eckhard Cordes said: “Our customers are increasingly asking for more information about food and its ingredients. They want to know how much fat and sugar is contained in their products. We therefore decided to further develop the nutritional food labelling of all own brands.”

He added: “This way we want to create greater transparency for consumers in the food sector and enable them to more easily pay attention to a balanced and healthy diet.”

Metro would not be drawn on when all its own-label lines would carry the labels but said the roll out would be complete “in the medium term”.
