German dairy co-op DMK saw sales climb almost 20% in 2013, helped by growth in overseas markets.

DMK, which sells brands including Humana infant formula and Milram cheese, booked revenue of EUR5.3bn (US$7.2bn) for last year, up 19.6% on 2012. It did not disclose its profits.

The company said its business outside Germany accounted for 44.5% of its sales in 2013, compared to 37.5% a year earlier.

DMK, like other major dairy processors in Europe, wants to expand internationally due to growing demand for dairy products in regions like Asia. Quotas on dairy production in the EU come to an end in 2015.

“Only if we combine our strong position in the domestic market with the potential for development in Eastern Europe, Asia and the emerging markets, can we provide our shareholders a durable competitive milk returns,” CEO Dr Josef Schwaiger said.
