German retailer Rewe has appointed Ernst Dieter Berninghaus as its chief executive officer, replacing Hans Reischl, who is to retire at the end of the year.


Berninghaus has been a corporate executive at Rewe since 1999, and has belonged to the company’s executive board since 2001. He is currently responsible for Rewe’s international activities. Reischl has been CEO of Rewe for 27 years.


The company also appointed Josef Sanktjohanser to its executive board, effective 1 March 2004. Sanktjohanser, who has worked for Rewe since 1986 and has held numerous leadership positions, is to oversee the retailer’s wholesale business.
