German retail giant Rewe is to accelerate the expansion of its domestic supermarket business.

A spokesman for the company told just-food today (7 October) that the retailer is planning to open “more than” 120 of its namesake supermarkets in Germany in 2011.

The spokesman said there was “no final decision” on the exact number of supermarkets to be opened next year. Rewe is part way through opening 120 of the outlets this year.

The company is also planning to expand its Rewe City chain, which focuses on city centres and which numbers over 180 outlets.

Meanwhile, Rewe also confirmed that CEO Alain Caparros would take a second senior executive role in the German retail sector and become chairman of department-store retailer Karstadt.
