German retailer Tengelmann is to sell 85 Kaiser stores to local rivals Rewe and Tegut, the company announced today (17 March).

Tengelmann, the parent company of US retailer A&P, has decided to scale back its operations in the German region of Rhine-Main-Neckar, which includes the cities of Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

Rhine-Main-Neckar is the smallest of four regions that house Kaiser stores in Germany and the disposals mark Tengelmann’s latest move to reduce its presence in the country.

In 2007, Tengelmann agreed to cede control of Plus, its discount business in Germany, to larger rival Edeka.

A&P, Tengelmann’s US venture, has had a troubled few quarters and in January appointed a new CEO in a bid to breathe fresh life into the business.
