Food companies are looking to tap into a “craze” for energy products, according to a survey of the latest NPD in the sector.
US firm Dakota Valley Products has launched a sunflower seed infused with caffeine. Sumseeds Sunflower Seeds are touted as containing the same active ingredients as energy sodas, which include caffeine, taurine and ginseng.
The survey, from Productscan Online, dubbed the world’s largest NPD database, also highlighted the launch of energy-giving candy presented in a soda style can.
Galerie’s new Sour Candy Formula Power Up! and Energy Eruption candies are presented in packaging that resembles a can of soda, and are said to provide the consumer with “an instant jolt.”, the survey said.
Moving from packaging to product flavouring, German chocolate producer Hans Schroeder has introduced a Sea Buckthorn and Orange Dark Chocolate variant to its DreiMeister Tafelschokolade line.
Meanwhile, in the UK, Unilever has teamed up with drinks giant Diageo to sell a limited edition Guinness-flavoured version of savoury spread Marmite.
