Fairtrade producers are struggling to meet demand as worldwide sales soar, the world’s top certification body has told just-food.

Global sales of rose by 47% last year, totalling EUR2.3bn (US$3.6bn), figures released by the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) have revealed.

Sweden was the fastest-growing market, with sales in the country climbing 166% to EUR42.5m. The Swiss had the highest per-capita consumption, while the largest market was the US, with sales reaching EUR731m.

However, the FLO warned that growth could be hampered by constraints in production.

“Our Fairtrade labelling standards encourage organic production and consumers who are buying Fairtrade often look for organic certification too,” the spokesperson told just-food. “It is difficult to meet demand because of the time it takes to convert to organic production. This does limit growth in some cases.”
