Officials leading the World Trade Organisation’s talks on food liberalisation look set to put take-it-or-leave-it proposals before the body’s members after losing patience with some trying to frame a deal behind the scenes.

The so-called G4 group – the US, the EU, India and Brazil – had promised to agree on the broad outlines of a deal on the Doha Development Round talks in order to pave a way for a final agreement.

However, while the EU and the US appear to have struck common ground on cutting their respective protective food duties and production subsidies, Brazil and India have refused to yield on reducing protection for their industrial goods and services.

As a consequence, final draft agreements should be circulated among all the members of the WTO next month regarding food and industrial goods, due to the links between the two sectors.
