Spanish food maker Grupo Siro has revealed plans to open its first North American manufacturing plant.

The facility, run by Cerealto Siro Foods, the arm that looks after Grupo Siro’s international businesses, will be located in Seguin, Texas. It is expected to create 212 new jobs over six years.

It will include a factory, that will produce cookies, cakes and snacks, an R&D centre and a “special employment centre” that will produce snacks, rice and corn cakes and create 20 adapted jobs for those considered socially excluded from the workforce.

A spokesperson for Cerealto Siro Foods told just-food US$60m has been invested in the project, including a US$1m grant from the Texas government.

The spokesperson said the plant would give Siro better access to its local clients and consumer base. “To serve the American market, you need to be in America,” she said.

Luis Angel Lopez, Cerealto Siro Foods’ CEO, added in a statement: “The city of Seguin is, undoubtedly, a strategic location to set up our factory due to its environmental conditions and highly qualified people. The factory will allow us to meet the demands of our clients in the United States while creating long-term economic and social value for locals.”
