Federal officials have broadened the charges being brought against the executives and owners of US halal food maker Midamar.

The company’s founder, William Aossey, was charged with 19 counts of breaking food labelling regulations at the end of October. Federal prosecutors have now extended the scope of the investigation, charging Aossey’s sons – William Aossey junior and Jalel Aossey – with a total of 93 additional charges.

The federal indictment includes: one count of conspiracy to make and use materially false statements and documents, sell misbranded meat and commit wire fraud, three counts of making false statements on export applications, 44 counts of wire fraud, 44 counts of money laundering and one count of conspiring to commit money laundering.

Midamar rebuffed the accusations faced by William Aossey senior. “Midamar is disappointed by the charges. The government’s heavy handed tactics in the course of the investigation during which company bank accounts were seized but later returned after discovery that Midamar had not engaged in any criminal misconduct, demonstrates the malicious intent behind the baseless charges alleging deceptive practices, fraud, and money laundering by Bill Aossey,” the company said in a statement.

The company was unavailable for comment on the fresh wave of charges at the time of writing.

Midamar supplies North American consumers with halal food products and exports products to the Middle East, south-east Asia and the Far East.
