HKScan, the Finland-based meat processor, has started an internal investigation into its operations in the Baltic states.

In a stock exchange filing, HKScan said today (14 November) the probe would “ensure that the principles of good corporate governance and HKScan’s code of conduct have been followed”.

HKScan gave no indication in the filing of what sparked the investigation and, when asked by just-food, said: “The group management has got information, which needed to be investigated. Unfortunately, we cannot disclose the content as the investigation is in progress. We always want to follow good corporate governance and our code of conduct. With the investigation, we want to secure that it has happened.

The company has estimated the probe would “last a few weeks”.

Unidentified members of the management team of HKScan’s operations in the region “have been relieved of their duties for the duration of the investigation”, the company said. “The investigation covers the entire Baltic management team but some are relieved of their duties. This is a temporary arrangement during the investigation. Nobody has been fired,” HKScan told just-food.

Anne Mere, the group’s chief marketing officer, is to assume the position of interim general manager of the Baltic business in addition to her existing duties.

CEO Jari Latvanen said: “It is important for us at HKScan that we always follow the principles of good governance and our code of conduct. We have initiated the investigation to ensure this. The continuity of our operations is guaranteed by an experienced team and the investigation will not affect our business.”
