A second poultry farm was closed after the owner reported that 1,000 of his chickens had died in recent days. The government moved in on Monday to slaughter the remaining 64,000 birds of his stock.


As the virus spread to stalls at the local market a further 3,000 birds were killed.


This latest cull came after the slaughter of about 110,000 birds over the weekend.


During May last year, the Hong Kong government ordered the slaughter of 1.2 million birds in a bid to curb the spread of the virus. Health officials have not yet confirmed if they will repeat the slaughter on this scale. Consumers have been assured, however, that the detected strain of the virus does not hurt humans.
