In a statement issued to the industry following its initial announcement on the results of testing of China sauces, the Food Standards Agency of the UK has indicated that “None of the products sampled from major retail chains posed any safety concern.” This was issued within 24 hours of their initial report.
In addition, the Hong Kong Government’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has indicated that their study was also conducted, and all Lee Kum Kee products in Hong Kong comply with established food standards.

“This is a clear vindication of all Lee Kum Kee products, and confirms what we have been saying: that Lee Kum Kee has taken the initiative to put in place a number of procedures to meet or exceed compliance for all of our products, and that we have been successful in our efforts to protect consumer safety,” Mr. Eddy Lee, chairman, Lee Kum Kee, stated publicly today in a media briefing with major Hong Kong and regional journalists.
The FSA’s deputy chairperson, Suzi Leather, issued an update on Thursday, June 21, following the release of the agency’s study the day before. In the statement, the FSA stressed that there is no reason to avoid Chinese food. The statement also indicated that none of the products sampled from any major retail chains in the UK posed any safety concern. Lee Kum Kee products are sold through a majority of these retail chains, and therefore are safe.
In a statement issued by Lee Kum Kee on June 19, the company stated that the FSA samples did not reflect the true situation of its products in the marketplace, nor did the study recognize the accomplishments of Lee Kum Kee as a responsible global food manufacturer.
“I can assure our loyal consumers that products meet or exceed the regulatory standards in the markets in which they are sold. In fact, we have also invested in our own advanced testing for these substances from raw materials through to our finished products under formal recognition by the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme, and our findings confirm the effectiveness of our measures.”
