Tesco has recalled its own label frozen Simply Roast Meatloaf after detecting a horsemeat content of between 2% and 5%.

In a statement released last night (12 March), Tesco technical director Tim Smith revealed that the meatloaf had been manufactured by Eurostock, a supplier based in Craigavon, Northern Ireland.

“Tests on 15 other lines from the same manufacturing site were clear of horsemeat,” Smith added.

The retailer said it would come to a decision on whether to delist Eurostock when it has completed its investigation into how horsemeat made its way into the product.

“As part of our new DNA testing programme we have now tested more than 500 products identified as being most at risk of containing horsemeat. This is the fourth Tesco-branded product to have tested positive,” Smith commented.

Tesco stepped up its testing for horsemeat after horse DNA was first detected in its own label frozen beef products in early February. The group has since insisted that it is increasing its commitment to take complexity out of the chain and source more meat in the UK.
