Wal-Mart has remained tight-lipped over reports that its Indian cash and carry joint venture with Bharti Group, Bharti Wal-Mart, is eyeing expansion into West Bengal.

The joint venture opened its first outlet last Saturday (30 May) under the Best Price Modern Wholesale banner.

The enterprise has indicated that it plans to open 10-15 new stores in northern India in its first two to three years of operation.

All of those opened during this year will be located in Punjab, a report in The Economic Times claimed. However, the report added that Bharti Wal-Mart aims to enter West Bengal in its second phase of expansion.

A spokesperson for Wal-Mart declined to comment on the retailer’s expansion plans for the market when contacted by just-food.
