Butcher gangs are illegally slaughtering around 4,000 extra animals every day in order to profit from a multi-crore meat export racket, according to officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The butchers in question, says the MCD, are based in residential areas such as Qasabpura, which is close to Delhi’s only abattoir. The Idgah slaughterhouse can legally kill 2,500 animals (500 buffaloes and 2,000 sheep and goats) every day, but butchers are slaughtering more in order to meet orders from west Asian countries.

The extra animals are killed in unhygienic conditions, but the MCD warned that forged quality certificates can be bought for about Rs 400 (US$8.25).

Authorities are concerned, saying that they are helpless in policing the butchers and implementing the statutory Rs 2,000 fine. Municipal health officer K N Tewari told the Times of India that more raids were necessary: “We cannot clamp down on illegal slaughter which is carried out in residences during the wee hours.”

Tewari added that a butcher at an illegal slaughter site attacked MCD officials recently.
