India’s largest listed retailer Pantaloon Retail has pulled Cadbury products from over 200 of its stores due to a row over pricing.

The company, which runs the Big Bazaar and Food Bazaar chains, has accused Cadbury of offering better trade terms to the new multinational retail chains in the country.

“We’ve discovered that other retailers especially those of foreign origin seem to be getting much more friendlier terms of trade,” Food Bazaar CEO Sadashiv Nayak told just-food.

“This hurts us because over the last four to five years of our association, we’ve aggressively built the brand and we now feel discriminated against.”

Cadbury, which accounts for 70% of chocolate sales in India, has seen its products pulled indefinitely from 89 Big Bazaar stores and 136 Food Bazaar outlets.

The UK-based confectioner said it felt the decision was harsh as talks with Pantaloon are ongoing. “This decision comes as surprise to us since negotiations are still on to finalize a mutually agreeable set of terms,” a spokesman for Cadbury India said.
