French dairy giant Danone has said that it is in ongoing talks with Britannia Industries over intellectual property rights of the Tiger brand.
Britannia produces biscuits, breads and cakes under Tiger and other brands for the Indian market. Danone holds a 50.95% stake in Britannia, with India’s Wadia group controlling the remaining 49.05% of the company’s capital.
Wadia has threatened legal action against Danone over the company’s use of the Tiger brand in other international markets. Danone sells the Tiger brand, which was established in 1995 by Britannia, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan and Egypt. It has reportedly registered it in 70 other countries.
Responding to reports in the Indian press that the French food group is preparing to hand over intellectual property rights relating to Tiger, a spokesperson for Danone told just-food that the two groups were yet to reach an agreement.
“We are in continuing negotiations with Britannia,” the spokesperson said today (23 April).
