Despite a ban on Indian sugar imports by Pakistan, exports from India have nearly reached their 1m ton target.

A government official revealed that exporters were asking for an additional export quota, telling the Press Trust of India news agency: “The government has given clearances for the export of nearly 980,000 tons of sugar and the remaining 20,000 tons from the quota will be allocated within the next few days.”

India has so far exported 200,000 tons of sugar to Sri Lanka. A further 50,000 was sold to Bangladesh and before the Pakistani import ban was put in place, 650,000 tons were exported to Pakistan from India. The government official confirmed that the remainder of the original quota was sold to about a dozen countries from around the world.
